UCR University Extension is the continuing education division of the University of California, Riverside — one of the top public research universities in the United States and a member of the Association of American Universities. Located in Riverside, California, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, UCR Extension has offered internationally recognized education for more than 65 years. The International Experience Programs division issues F-1 student visas for in-person programs including Intensive English, degree preparation pathways, postgraduate certificates, professional certificates, and master's preparation programs. Program lengths range from four weeks to twelve months and beyond.
UCR University Extension recommends HomestayMatch and Universal Student Housing as official off-campus homestay options for international students. A homestay places you with a pre-screened American host family in the Riverside area, giving you a private furnished room, a welcoming home environment, and daily immersion in American culture and English — all within reach of the UCR campus.
Every homestay includes a private bedroom, shared common areas, and access to laundry. Most hosts offer meal plans — breakfast and dinner, breakfast only, or room only — so you can choose the level of support that fits your schedule and budget. All host families are personally reviewed and background-checked before being accepted into our network.
Living with a host family is one of the most effective ways to improve your English and adjust to American life. Whether you are here for a four-week short course or a full-year degree preparation program, a homestay provides the personal support and cultural immersion that an apartment simply cannot offer. HomestayMatch hosts are located throughout the Riverside area with convenient access to the UCR campus.
Yes. UCR University Extension lists both HomestayMatch and Universal Student Housing as official recommended homestay providers on its student housing page. Both are available to F-1 students in all IEP programs.
UCR Extension offers International Village, an on-campus furnished apartment complex for Extension students. Homestay places you with an American host family off-campus — a better fit for students who want daily English practice, cultural immersion, and the personal support of a local family rather than a student apartment setting.
